Café Procope: el más antiguo de París

Cada vez que llego a una ciudad nueva, una de las primeras cosas que trato de conocer es cuál es el café más antiguo de la ciudad.

En el caso de París es todo un mérito ya que hay muchos que cafés que tienen más de 300 años, pero es que se lleva el premio al primero y aún en funcionamiento es el Café Procope que esta en servicio desde 1686!.

Visitando el Café Procope

Como amante de los cafés históricos, cuando tengo la oportunidad visitar alguno de estos lugares, lo tomo como si visitara un museo, sin presentaciones de que lo que vaya a consumir sea bueno o no.
En mi visita al café Greco de Roma mencionaba que el lugar ya forma parte del patrimonio histórico de la ciudad, más alla de su carta…
En el Café Procope sucede algo parecido. Hay opiniones buenas y malas sobre su carta y sus platos estrella como como gallo al vino y la cabeza de becerro, por ejemplo.
En mi caso sólo pedí un café (4 euros…) ya que todo lo que quería es conocer el ambiente del lugar y tratar de remontarme a otras épocas.
El interior del Procope
Si están visitando el barrio latino, les recomiendo que no se pierdan unas visita a este café. El interior es realmente hermosos, toda la decoración, las pinturas, las cortinas, las sillas, mesas y todo lo demás esta cuidado hasta el máximo detalle.
Para mi sorpresa casi no había turistas cuando lo visité, más bien parecían clientes habituales y no estaba muy lleno, aunque es un lugar muy amplio.
Todos los veranos colocan mesas en la calle, para que los comensales se sienten a observar el paso de la gente, en este hermoso rincón de París.




Historia de Café Procope

Fundado en 1686 por el  siciliano Francesco Procopio que tuvo la idea de abrir cerca de Saint-Germain-des-Prés un establecimiento donde se probaría el café, que se había introducido veinte años antes en la corte parisina y lo decoró con todo el lujo de la época.
Voltaire y Rousseau eran habituales del lugar, en lo que fue el primer café literario. Diderot concibió entre sus paredes su Encyclopédie.
El Club de los Cordeliers, que aquí se reunió, con Danton y Marat como figuras principales, constituyó también un foco revolucionario.
El gorro frigio (propio de los libertos en la Antigüedad) se exhibió en el Procope por primera vez, y de aquí partió también la consigna para el ataque a las Tullerías
